SEO timelines, honestly

How long does SEO take to work?

There's no honest universal deadline for this. How quickly SEO shows results depends on your site's history, its current technical health, how competitive your market is and how consistently the work gets done — which is why anyone giving you a fixed number of weeks upfront is guessing rather than assessing.

What sets the pace

Eight things that speed SEO up or slow it down.

  • Age and history of the site

A domain with years of consistent content and no penalties has a head start over one that's brand new or has changed hands and direction repeatedly.

  • Competition

A niche with three competitors moves faster than one where twenty businesses are already investing seriously in search.

  • Technical condition

If the site has indexing problems, broken pages or a slow load time, that has to be fixed before ranking improvements have anywhere to land.

  • Current rankings

Nudging a page from position 15 to 8 is usually quicker than building visibility for a page that doesn't rank at all yet.

  • Authority

Sites that search engines already trust tend to see new pages perform faster than sites still establishing that trust.

  • Content

Thin or generic pages take longer to earn visibility than pages that genuinely answer what someone's searching for.

  • Location

Local visibility for a well-defined area often moves faster than trying to compete nationally against much larger sites.

  • Frequency and quality of work

Consistent, well-targeted monthly work compounds. Sporadic or thin effort mostly just maintains the status quo.

Not one finish line

Milestones that don't arrive together.

People often ask "when will SEO work" as if there's a single moment it switches on. In practice, several things happen at different speeds, roughly in this order.

  1. 01

    Indexing

Google finding and storing the page. This can happen within days for a healthy site, longer for a new or technically troubled one.

  2. 02

    Impressions

The page starting to appear in search results, even a long way down. Usually the first visible sign anything is happening.

  3. 03

    Improved positions

The page climbing for its target terms. This tends to happen gradually and unevenly, not as a single jump.

  4. 04

    Increased clicks

More people actually visiting from search — which depends on position, but also on how compelling the title and description are.

  5. 05

    Useful enquiries

The commercial outcome you actually want. This lags behind the others and depends on the page converting once someone arrives.

Why we won't promise a date

Ongoing measurement matters more than a deadline.

We won't promise results within a set number of months, because nobody controls Google's results and a fixed promise is either lucky or dishonest. What we can commit to is doing the work consistently and telling you what the data actually shows.

That's why our ongoing SEO retainers include a monthly summary of what's changed and what we'd recommend next — not a countdown to an arbitrary finish date.

If you want to know what that ongoing work actually costs, that's covered on our SEO cost page.
